The St. Mary’s Tennis team played their third straight match against 6A opponents before beginning conference play after Spring Break. Despite missing six varsity players, the Crusaders battled hard in each match with junior varsity players stepping up to play their first varsity match. Sam Miller and TaylorRose Tavares won their match at number one doubles, as did Ashley Hamilton and Marina Qian at number three doubles. Both matches went to a third set tie-breaker. This was Miller’s second straight victory against 6A opponents. The match with Hamilton and Qian went a grueling 2 and 1/2 hours. Freshmen, Finley Cox, continued to improve at number one singles, pushing a quality opponent to a 6-4, 6-4 match, highlighted by a marathon deuce game that lasted almost ten minutes. Eve Von Strahl, Maggie Von Strahl and Shelby McNeil also played singles, and Jenny Nguyen and Jessica Ho played number two doubles. Nguyen and Ho forced a first set tie-breaker despite it being Ho’s first varsity match and Nguyen moving up from the number 4 double spot to fill in for missing players. The team gets back on the court with a home match against conference foe, Hidden Valley, on April 12.
