Game Recap

At U.S. Cellular Park the St. Mary’s girls took on the defending 4A state champion North Valley Knights. Neither team could break into the scoring column in the first half, but at the 46th minute mark of the second half, Maddie Wheelock received a pass from Ibixica Alvarez just outside the penalty box, broke through the Knights defensive line and finished with a shot into the far post netting. Seven minutes later, Baylee Touey equalized with a quick shot from 18 yards out with an assist by Brianna Robles. In the 64th minute, Touey earned her second goal after receiving a pass from Haley Kersten and breaking away up the center of goal and slipping in the game winner. St. Mary’s had a couple of good chances to score, but came up just short. The crusaders showed significant growth from the opening minutes of the match where most of the play was in their defensive third. In the next ten minutes of the half, play was in the middle of the field and from then on it was end to end. “I was very pleased with the determination of the girls to compete with North Valley and impressed with their progress during course of the match,” said Coach Potter. “I think they are finding their game.”

On Saturday, the girls open up their league season traveling to Lakeview. Match time is slated for 1:00.

Game Recap

Last year’s matchup between the St. Mary’s Crusaders and the Harrisburg Eagles was a real shootout, that ended in favor of the Eagles 48-41. That game started out with the only scoring in the first quarter coming from three Harrisburg touchdowns, and that’s how Friday night’s game started as well. Unfortunately for the Crusaders, that’s where the similarities ended.

Plagued by penalties and personnel changes, the Crusaders had great difficulty finding any offensive rhythm. The Eagles would score 6 times in the first half, missing only one extra point, which made the score 41-0 at the half.

The Crusaders played a different brand of football in the second half, and connected on quite a few great plays. Junior quarterback Cody Conner found junior wide receiver Jake Sieg for a 46 yard touchdown pass, and junior Gavin Rajagopal kicked the extra point that got the Crusaders on the board in the third quarter.

Later in the third, Conner found Sieg again for an impressive 64 yard touchdown pass, with the majority of those yards coming after the catch. From the “if it ain’t broke…” file, Conner would find Sieg once more in the 4th quarter for a 3 yard touchdown pass.

Cody Conner finished the game 17 of 27 for 238 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Jake Sieg amassed 139 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 6 receptions. Junior running back Jake Reynolds led the team in rushing with 62 yards on 8 carries. The Crusaders totalled 354 yards of total offense.

The 1-1 Crusaders travel to Gold Beach on Friday, September 15th to play the 0-1 Panthers. The Gold Beach Panthers lost their season opening against Coquille 50-0.

Game Recap

At Henley, playing outside for the first time in two weeks, the Crusader girls earned their first victory of the 2017 season. Led by junior forward Meghan Michels’ four goal performance, St. Mary’s outscored the Hornets 5 – 2. Senior midfielder Sara Klott provided two assists and junior midfielder Ibixica Alvarez garnered one assist on three of Michels’ scores. The fourth came off a heads-up observation and decision by Michels when the Crusaders were awarded a direct kick from 20 yards out. Noticing the Hornets defensive actions were slow to take shape, Michels fired in a low driven shot to the back of the net sealing the scoring. The fifth goal was earned by junior forward Gabi Castillo by way of a penalty kick following a foul in the box in the 34th minute. Senior Adrien Birmingham handled goalkeeping duties in the first half doing a solid job against an aggressive and threatening Henley attack giving up only one goal. In the second half, sophomore Zoe Alftine made her high school goalkeeping appearance making three high pressure saves and also allowing only one goal. Each played key roles in the victory.

Next up for the Crusaders – air permitting – will be reigning 4A state champions North Valley on Wednesday, September 13 at home.
