Game Recap

The ladies fell short to Rogue River but not without a fight! Ellie Hillen served, passed and returned the ball throughout the games. Brynn Traynor, Jocelyn Cortes-Martinez, and Kate Twombly all served with confidence. Returning players, Kaitlyn Hansen and Maren Chamberland used their experience at the net to a victory in game 2. The ladies had multiple good volleys. It is awesome to see the heart and determination the ladies show on the court! Great job ladies!

Game Recap

The outcome of a game that starts out with seven changes of possession in the first quarter alone, all while only one touchdown was scored is difficult to predict. The St. Mary’s Crusaders played The Coquille Red Devils in Spiegelberg Stadium last Saturday night, it was the first time these two teams had met in that location.

At the end of the first quarter, the score was 8-0 Red Devils, after a 32 yard rushing touchdown and a successful 2-point conversion. The second quarter brought a slew of Coquille scores. Turnovers, penalties, and explosive plays brought the Red Devils to paydirt 4 separate times, once on a 51-yard pass, two on rushes of 33 and 51 yards, and once on a 25 yard fumble returned for a touchdown. All but one of their 2-point conversions failed, so the score at half time was 34-0 in favor of Coquille.

The Crusaders had more success in the second half than the first. Coquille scored on a 29 yard run at the end of a 5 play drive, and after that it was back-and-forth until the fourth quarter, during which the Crusaders would return to the well of the three juniors, quarterback Cody Conner, running back Jake Reynolds, and running back Gavin Rajagopal for three touchdowns of their own. Reynolds got St. Mary’s on the board with a 13 yard scamper, and then Rajagopal got in on the action with a 70 yard touchdown of his own. After that, Conner took it to the air and found Reynolds for a 40 yard touchdown pass. The Crusaders kicked two extra points and went for two once, but out of these three attempts only made one of the kicks, to make the final score 42-19 Red Devils.

This Friday the 2-2 Crusaders play at their other home – US Cellular Field, as they take on the 1-3 Taft Tigers out of Lincoln City in non-league play. In the Tigers’ last game, they lost 34-19 to Sheridan.
