Autzen Stadium, University of Oregon – Three St. Mary’s coaches were recognized at this year’s Oregon Athletic Coaches Association (OACA) banquet. Joe Volk was recognized for his 35 years of coaching, a career that has included several league coach of the year honors, a number of state coach of the year awards in both Track and Cross Country, and one NFHS National Coach of the Year award. Coach Volk was also awarded the 3A Girls Track Coach of the Year as he led the St. Mary’s Girls Track and Field squad to the 2016 OSAA 3A State Championship.
Kevin Dixon, another coach with more than 30 years of coaching experience at various levels, and several league coach of the year titles, was awarded the 1A/2A/3A/4A Girls Golf Coach of the Year for guiding the Crusader’s to the 2016 state title. Dixon’s squad returned this year to defend their title and came home with another OSAA Championship trophy.
Richard Vasey was recognized as the Middle School Coach of the Year for his work as the head coach of the St. Mary’s Middle School Track team. The middle school track program has seen steady growth and improvement over the years and Vasey has guided both the boys and girls squads to top three placements in the SOMSAC District Championships on three different occasions, including 2nd and 3rd place finishes at this year’s meet. Several of his athletes have moved on to win both individual and team state titles at the high school level and has included a number of state medalists as well.
