The finals match of the year for the Lady Crusaders Tennis Team also proved to be the most exciting, including a dazzling display of the power of nature, in the form of thunder, lightening, rain and hail that ultimately prevented either team to claim victory. After falling behind 3 matches to zero, the Crusaders doubles team of Zoe Alftine and Susanna Schatz revenged an early season loss by winning a marathon match that featured two tie-breakers. This followed a strong showing by Megan Nelson and TaylorRose Tavares, who pushed one of the top teams in the district deep into the second set before falling in a tighter than expected match. Jenny Nguyen won her fourth singles match of the season to close the margin to 3-2, and then the team of Ashley Hamilton and Chloe Xi, playing together for the first time, notched the match at 3-3. With one singles match and one doubles match still in progress the blue skies began to darken and it was clear that it would be a race to complete the match. In the singles match, team captain Eve VonStrahl fell behind 4-1 before rallying to tie the match at 6 all. On the double side, the rapidly improving team of Anais Fang and Rosemary Weston played a back and forth match the went into a ten point tie-breaker that was all even at 2 points each when the match was called because of the impending storm. It was not the way the Crusaders wanted the regular season to end, but it will one that is long remembered. St.Mary’s Tennis will play in the district championships beginning May 11.
