South Medford High School
The young Lady Crusaders Tennis team has been asked all season to compete against stronger and much more experienced squads, three of those matches against Division 6A competition. On Thursday, under rare blue skies, the match weary team was able to see the progress they have made because of all those hard matches when they went up in Division to play South Medford’s JV team. The Crusaders came away with the first victory of the season with a 6-2 win.
In the singles, Kunyang Lu continued her fine play, notching her fourth victory in her last six matches. Leah Sternenberg, who has twice this season lost in tiebreakers, played another two hour match but this time she came away with a win. The third single win came from Jenny Nguyen who played a strong match, winning straight sets without dropping a game.
On the double side, the team of Zoe Alftine and Susanna Schatz took a quick lead that they never relinquished. Schatz is now the only member of the team with a win in both doubles and singles. TaylorRose Tavares and Megan Nelson won their first set handily but were forced into a second set tiebreaker before claiming their second doubles win of the season. The third doubles win came from the rapidly improving team of Anais Fang and Rosemary Weston.
The team of Shumeng Li and Ashley Hamilton fell short, but played their best match of the season and Xueer Qi played through a nagging injury in the final singles match.
The Crusaders will have little time to rest, they play a rematch against a strong Henley squad on Saturday.
