The St. Mary’s Crusaders, Southern Oregon’s lone high school lacrosse team, opened the season at home with a sudden death, overtime victory over visiting Ridgeview. St. Mary’s started the game strong going up 1-0 within the first two minutes of the game and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
For the next three quarters St. Mary’s was never able to get up by more than two goals and the Ridgeview squad battled to even the score several times. An outstanding effort in goal by Evan Rudisile and strong defensive play by Aidan Young, Preston Jernigan, and Connor Walker kept Ridgeview from gaining any consistent momentum.
Mid-way through the fourth period, the Crusaders were able to gain an 8-7 advantage on a rolling ball that ricocheted off a defender and past the Ridgeview goalie. St. Mary’s tried to hang on, but, as was the case for much of the day, costly penalties by St. Mary’s kept them shorthanded and Ridgeview capitalized with an equalizer to send the game into overtime tied 8-8.
In OT Ridgeview won the face-off and immediately looked to attack. Less than two minutes into overtime the Crusader defense forced a turnover and quickly moved the ball up the left side of the field catching the Ridgeview defense out of position. A very well placed pass found a cutting Garrett Arman in front of the goal and with some good stick work and strong shot Arman found the back of the net to end the game and give the Crusaders a 9-8 win.
St. Mary’s will take their squad on the road to Roseburg Friday, March 4th with the opening face-off scheduled for 5:30pm.
