Game Recap

Crusaders Make the State Football Playoffs for the First Time in 22 Years

Heavy rain throughout pre-game warm-ups into the beginning of the game, and senior Calder Prulhiere’s opening kickoff return for a touchdown called back due to a penalty. This type of early adversity can at times derail a team’s poise. This was not the case for the St. Mary’s Crusaders in their Southern Cascade League matchup against the Illinois Valley Cougars on Saturday night.

St. Mary’s entered the game at 1-1 in the SCL and 5-3 overall. A win against the Cougars would send them into the OSAA playoffs – somewhere the Crusaders haven’t been in over 2 decades. The boys came into the game focused and ready to take their post-season destiny in their own hands, winning handily in the final game of the regular season.

Much like last week’s game against Lakeview, the Crusaders’ impressive team win featured many outstanding individual efforts.

Sophomore Gavin Rajagopal broke 100 yards rushing once again, bring his regular season totals to 1,117 yards on the ground with 13 rushing touchdowns (15 overall).

With 153 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 4 receptions, senior Bryce Bramscher finishes the regular season with 1,006 yards receiving on 44 catches and 15 touchdowns through the air (19 overall)

Senior Thys Kuitert threw the ball 11 times and connected 9 times for 275 yards and 6 touchdowns. His 2016 regular season totals: 116/197 passes for 1,913 yards and 24 touchdowns (27 overall).

The 1994 Crusaders were the last ones to make it to the OSAA playoffs. They fell to Lost River 41-6 in the opening round. 7th year head coach Jamie Young and the Crusaders prepare now to head back to Coquille to face the #2 ranked Red Devils (9-0 overall, 5-0 Mountain Valley Conference) for the second time this year.
