Game Recap

The Crusaders’ Middle School Football team continued their winning ways with an efficient performance according to HC Vu. “We had another great performance by our boys. We were efficient on our plays, and very disciplined. We were able to drive on them consistently, and also showed our explosiveness.”
The Crusaders defeated Hedrick Hornets Middle School 34-14 in a victory to pushed their season record to 5-0. The Crusaders took the opening drive of the game down the field for a short touchdown run. Hedrick responded with a long, time consuming touchdown drive, and after a 2-point conversion led the game 8-7 early into the second quarter.
“I think Hedrick really showed moxie with their response to our first touchdown. We challenged our boys to step up our defense, and we held them scoreless until late in the fourth quarter.” The offense also responded on the Crusaders’ second drive when on the 3rd play QB Will Heycke faked a hand-off and ran 60 yards for a TD down the left sideline. Following a successful 2-point conversion on a run by WR Nathan Sternenberg, the Crusaders executed a successful onside kick that was recovered by WR Gavin Bergen. TB Jonah Hadley’s tough inside running setup a long pass from QB Beau Aldrich to WR Andrew Rietmann, who made a spectacular catch against 2 defenders inside the 10 yard line. Heycke scored on the next play to stretch the Crusaders lead to 21-8 which they took into halftime.
The second half was more of the same for efficient drives by the Crusaders. The defense stopped Hedrick on a 3 and out and forced a punt to start the third quarter. Sternenberg returned a punt 25 yards to setup the Crusaders on the Hedrick 35 yard line. On the third play from scrimmage, Aldrich connected with Rietmann on a 15-yard touchdown pass. The Crusaders scored on a pass from Alrdich to HB Bryce Stiemert on the third play of the fourth quarter making the score 34-8.
“Their first and last drive of the game we gave up some yards and points, but in between we showed what type of team we can be. We did not punt the entire game, and really had so many boys make plays that kept their defense off balance. We had Luke (Bennion, WR) and Ben (Reynolds, RB) who really stepped up with their opportunities. The Offensive Line was absolutely stellar. Defensively we made some coaching adjustments, but so many different boys made plays. It was tremendous to see the progress our boys have made.”
