Game Recap

St. Mary’s Crusaders MS Football team earned their 4th win of the season against Fleming MS on Wednesday at St. Mary’s. After playing on the road the past 2 weeks, the Crusaders played a homecoming game in front of a large crowd which included members of St. Mary’s HS Varsity coaches and players. The Crusaders used a balanced offensive attack, and another solid defensive performance that held Fleming scoreless until late in the fourth quarter.
According to head coach Vu; “We emphasized teamwork and toughness this week in practice, and the boys really responded demonstrating both with a stellar performance in front of our home crowd. We had 5 different boys score our touchdowns, but even more important than that was we had a dozen different players on offensive make plays running or catching the ball which was a part of our game plan. Our offensive line was tremendous giving us the opportunity to call those plays. Defensively we had our blue jerseys swarming all over the field. They spread us out a bit and gained some yards, but we had so many kids make tremendous plays pursuing all over the field and being disciplined in our scheme. This was by far our best performance of teamwork.

The Crusaders opened the scoring in the first quarter on a long TD pass from QB Beau Aldrich to HB Bryce Stiemert. They struck for 2 more TDs in the second quarter, the first on a pass from Aldrich to WR Andrew Rietmann and second on a long run by TB Will Heycke. The Crusader built on their lead scoring on a TD run by TB Jonah Hadley in the third quarter, and in the fourth quarter on a fade pass from Aldrich to WR Nathan Sternenberg.
Assistant coach John O’Boyle, who has been an inspirational leader for the team, commented that this game was exactly the reason he loves football so much, “seeing all the boys perform to the best of their abilities and playing for one another.”
