Game Recap

St. Mary’s Crusaders Middle School Football team stretched their record to 2-0 with an impressive 18-16 win on the road at Ashland Middle School. After a scoreless hard-hitting first quarter on both sides, the Crusaders took control of the game scoring 3 touchdowns in the second quarter. Despite going into a stiff wind, the Crusaders connected on a 35 yard pass play from QB Will Heycke to WR Nathan Sternenberg. The extra point try was unsuccessful leaving the score 6-0 Crusaders. Following the kickoff, the Defense made a hard hit on an Ashland running back causing a fumble for turnover. Two plays later, Heycke connected once again to Sternenberg, this time for a 45 yard touchdown strike stretching the lead to 12-0. Another turnover caused by Crusaders hard hitting defense late in the first half led to a touchdown in the last minute on a run by Heycke stretching lead to 18-0. After surrendering a touchdown in the 3rd quarter and late in the fourth quarter making the score 18-16, the Crusaders mounted a drive Head coach Tam Vu referred to as a “character drive”, chewing up nearly 4 minutes. Though stopped on downs, the defense once again took the field and caused a fumble on a sack of Grizzlies’ QB. The recovery snuffed out Ashland’s final drive allowing the Crusaders to take a knee in a Victory formation capping a win in a hard fought battle. “Our defense was absolutely gritty today. That was a big Ashland team with good athletes. Our boys showed what we may lack in size we make up for in hard-nosed attitude finishing tackles and causing turnovers. Our 4 game captains this week, Lance (Parrish), Matt (Wyant), Stephen (Seus), and Hammer (Heemir Patel) led our group on the defensive line allowing our linebackers and defensive backs to make plays. It was an all around tremendous performance by all of our boys.”
