Meet Recap

It was fitting that a close team match was decided by third set tie-breaker victories by St. Mary’s # 3 and # 4 doubles teams, but it was the tie-breaker lost by St. Mary’s that was the most exciting for the day.

Megan Nelson normally plays doubles, but her partner was unable to play so Nelson filled in at the #3 singles spot. She won the first set 6-4 but than lost the second by the same score. The 10 point, third set tie-breaker had to go extra time before Nelson finally lost 12-10. In the other singles, Alicia Lu continued her hot streak, winning 6-1 6-2 for her fifth victory of the year. Jenny Nguyen, who recently switched from doubles to singles, notched her second straight win 6-4 6-0.

In the double matches Zoe Alftine and Susanna Schatz continued to improve as the district championships approach, winning 6-4 6-2. Their second set was the strongest and most consistent set for the duo thus far this year. Lisa Li and Ashley Hamilton went to a tie-breaker for their first victory as a team this year. The final doubles match of the day would determine which team won. For St.Mary’s, Chloe Qi was trying to recover from a season long injury, and Allye Lemley had just officially joined the team after being cleared from the effects of a concussion sustained in March. Lemley had only practiced once, and had never played with Qi. Never the less, the team played hard and forced a third set tie-breaker, which they won 10-6, ensuring the victory for the Crusaders.

The Lady Crusaders will have to pick up their games next week when they move up to play two Division 6 schools; Ashland on Tuesday and a very strong Grants Pass squad on Thursday.
