Game Recap

The St. Mary’s girls continued their run of good play by downing Cascade Christian 4 – 1 at US Cellular Field Saturday morning. Opening the scoring for the Crusaders came in the 22nd minute when sophomore Gabi Castillo beat the Challengers keeper after a threaded pass was given to her by sophomore Ibixica Alvarez who played another dominating game at center mid. In the 45th minute Castillo scored her second goal of the match on a kick from the spot following a handball in the penalty area. In the 50th minute, Cascade Christian got their lone goal on a 54 yard direct kick by sophomore Emily Stevens. The Crusaders responded with two more goals – each assisted by senior Anna Peterson. Junior Sara Klott finished with a skillful bent shot from 22 yards out and freshman Claire Pyka made a perfectly timed run to the far post to knock in the final goal. Exceptional play was turned in by the back line made up of junior Mia Lawson, and sophomores Meghan Michels, Maddie Wheelock and Grace Weber. In goal, Adrien Birmingham provided sold play for the crusaders by getting involved in the rebuilding and possession game. Highlighting the outing today was the return of Grace Weber to the starting line-up following a grueling month-long rehab for a leg injury.

The Crusaders resume play next Saturday at Illinois Valley with a 1:30 kickoff.
