US Cellular Field – Returning home after several weeks on the road, and facing Roseburg for the third time in less than a month, the Crusader Lacrosse team struggled with an inconsistent offensive attack and costly penalties on the defensive side.

With the game tied 2-2 mid-way through the second period, and the Roseburg defense making it hard for St. Mary’s to find clean shots on goal, junior Garrett Arman drove through a double team for a single-handed goal to put the home side up 3-2.  It looked like the Crusader’s would go into half with the lead, and some momentum.  Unfortunately, seconds before the half, a penalty was called on senior Alex Finch and before time was even stopped Roseburg tied it up 3-3 heading to the break.

The third period saw a back-and-forth game with both sides unable to gain any traction on either side of the field.  The Crusaders held on defense and had two great opportunities to score, one on a deep pass from defenseman Aidan Young to Arman in front of the goal for a clean shot that went just wide.  The third ended still knotted 3-3.

The Crusaders were able to find the net early in the fourth to go up 4-3, but again a costly penalty put them short-handed and Roseburg was able to respond with crisp ball movement, finding an open player undefended in front of the goal to tie the score 4-4.  Mid-way through the fourth, St. Mary’s missed out on a great opportunity when Roseburg was down two players, but two shots went high and the ball was cleared as the penalties expired.  With less than five minutes left, St. Mary’s defense seemed to be holding, but with a ground ball in front of a crowded goal, Roseburg won the ball and and found the net.  St. Mary’s was unable to mount any sustained attack for the remaining minute and Roseburg won 5-4.

The Crusaders will next be in action at home against visiting Winston Churchill High School.  The game will be Saturday 4/22 at US Cellular Fields with the opening face-off scheduled for noon.
